Steinbeck's classic novel has proven to be an evergreen
of American Cinema
Lon Chaney Jr as Lennie
Lennie played by Randy Quaid
Godzilla, in a typical approach shot.
Obviously, it will be a major acting adjustment
for him to achieve the intimacy and up-close presence
required for this role.
Steven Spielberg, now in pre-production for the film, insisted:
"Godzilla is perfect for the role of Lennie Small.
Lennie is huge; Godzila is huge. Lennie struggles with communication; So does Godzilla. Lennie breaks things; Godzilla breaks things. Lennie comes from the economic bottom of society; Godzilla comes from the bottom of the ocean. And ofcourse, Lennie is misunderstood, as is Godzilla. So this is a role Godzilla will understand right from deep-down inside his soul. I fully expect him to bring dimensions to the role we've never realized before."
Producer Gale Ann Hurd added,
"Ofcourse Godzilla will not have radioactive breath in this picture. That would be innappropriate and unrealistic. This production will be totally down-to-earth."

Godzilla could not be reached for comment, although a spokesman for Godzilla's agent has stated,
"We negotiated for a modest destruction scene, at Godzilla's request. One of the barns on the ranch will be crushed, but only at an appropriate moment in the story, ofcourse. Otherwise, the general storyline will remain unchanged."
Godzilla's ability to emote
is well-known among filmmakers and fans alike.
John Malkovich as Lenny in the key scene with Lennie's wife.
This scene may provide unique acting challenges for Godzilla,
who is reported to be attacking his new role with the
fierce professionalism for which he has long been known.
This new role may mark a fresh departure for the giant star, who is reportedly
engaged in a special intense physical training program to get his height down
from its usual 400+ feet to under 250 feet, in order to achieve better
proportion with the sets and the other actors.
Of Mice And Men author, John Steinbeck, may never have
imagined a giant reptile as one of his most unforgettable characters.
Career breakthrough ahead?
Success in a serious drama like Of Mice And Men could
completely alter the giant star's career arc, and perhaps,
for actors, the balance-of-power in Hollywood.
Godzilla's US representative added,
"If this project goes well, which I am confident it will,
next up on the agenda is
the part of Willie Loman in "Death Of A Salesman."
And the rep's confidence was unrelenting:
"After he nails the Lenny role, he's gonna' kill in that one."
